Construction starts in the first eye hospital in the Himalayan area of Bhakunde Besi in Nepal

ISMS partners with Dooley Intermed in building the first eye hospital in the Himalayan area of Bhakunde Besi in Nepal. It is Nepal’s poorest district with population of 600,000+. There are tens of thousands of patients in that area who are suffering from eye diseases and not a single hospital dedicated to provide eye care to them. We are proud to part of this ambitious outreach and in building the first and only eye hospital in that area.

Riverhead doctor on a mission to save lives across the globe

Dr. Rajesh Patel was standing inside a big, empty hospital in a remote region of Brazil in 1999 when a nurse summoned him to the emergency room. Lying on the floor was a pregnant 16-year-old, seizing and frothing at the mouth.

Recognizing the girl was in the throes of eclampsia, a life-threatening pregnancy complication for which delivery is the only treatment, Dr. Patel ran outside to locate his colleagues Dr. Medhat Allam and Dr. Ravi Kothuru…

ISMS Team Michigan in Riobamba, Ecuador. Final blog post.

Hello Friends and Family,
We are all home safely and in our respective states and countries! We are starting to adjust back to our normal routines and we apologize for not being the best at keeping the blog up to date, but once the surgeries started every member of our team was busy and worked long into the night. The mission week was filled with lots of laughter, amazing surgeries, and yes… exhaustion. Our team members were extremely hard working throughout the entire trip. The hospital that we worked with in Riobamba was very welcoming and wanted to work with us in helping the people of Ecuador. Their staff was so accommodating and helpful throughout our entire time there. It was fun for our team to interact with many of their local doctors and nurses and to learn from them about local medicine and culture. We hope they learned the same things from our team.

ISMS Team Michigan finishes their Ecuador mission

We had a very busy last few days with  long days of surgeries, hence the lack of communication.
Both the ISMS team and the local team worked very well together with strong bonds and friendships formed.

The Ecuadorean people are warm and friendly and were very appreciative.
Final summary will follow once the team arrives back in the states.

Here are some more photos of us closing up shop here in Riobamba. Next stop – Peru!

ISMS Team Michigan’s update from Ecuador mission

Some of us awoke to warm showers today. The rest of us were left in the cold. A friendly feud was had between the have’s and have not’s! After a breakfast of fresh fruit, delicious omelets, and warm unknown juice we headed to the public hospital of Riobamba, Ecuador. Twenty four of us split into 5 different cars and arrived at the hospital lobby where patients were quietly waiting for us. It is Sunday morning and aside from our surgical mission group, the hospital staff assisting us, and the patients the hospital was eerily vacant in the morning. Our first mission was to unload our 54 crates and bags of surgical equipment to the operating room. We were excited to get underway!

The surgical teams split up into urology, general surgery, and plastic surgery and headed toward the consultation rooms. The urologists, Drs’ Brad and Pradeep (Michigan), had a busy morning coordinating care with local urologist Dr. Garcia Wilson.   He kept the atmosphere light joking with patients and staff, reminding them that international experts on ‘all things below the belt’ had finally arrived. 15 surgeries ranging from uterovaginal prolapsed to prostate cancer were boarded for surgery starting the next day. Drs’ Pravin (Iowa) and Helen (Ireland) identified three patients including a twelve year old who needed colostomy reversals. Plastic surgeons, Drs’ Parit (Chicago) Mehul (Michigan) and Loren (Michigan) identified large number of microtia and complex cleft palate.
