The Orthopedic Team completed their first mission with Operation International with great success. The team performed 35 total knee replacements on 32 patients in Bhutan in just one week, providing each patient with improved mobility and pain relief.
The Orthopedic Team focused on lderly patients with chronic knee pain during their first mission in Bhutan. The highly technical procedure restores mobility and reduces pain by replacing the damaged joint with a metal prosthesis. According to a local article written about the mission:
“Patients said they have been struggling with knee pain for a long time, making it difficult to perform even simple tasks.
Now, with the surgery, they are hopeful that they will be able to walk and move around without much pain.
Patients came all the way to Gelephu from other districts for the surgery.
‘I endured pains before the surgery. Right now, I cannot bend my knee joint but I am feeling better,’ said Deli Ram Archariya, a patient.”
